Quick Safety Check-Off List

A simple tick-box list to confirm the essentials for loading and unloading.

How to Load (Step-by-Step)

  1. Plan the load: heaviest items to the front half, centred left-to-right.
  2. Set ramps/tilt; confirm pins and latches are engaged.
  3. Guide slowly up the ramps; use a spotter; keep people clear of the line of travel.
  4. Position for balance; aim ~10% ball weight; avoid rear-heavy setups.
  5. Apply park brake on cargo (vehicles/machinery); chock wheels.
  6. Tie down with rated straps at multiple points; pre-tension evenly.
  7. Do a short re-tension after a few minutes, then again after a few kilometres.

How to Unload (Step-by-Step)

  1. Choose level ground; handbrake on; chock if needed.
  2. Set ramps/tilt; confirm pins and latches are engaged.
  3. Release straps methodically; stay clear of potential pinch or swing points.
  4. Use winch/low gear to control speed down the ramps — never ride on the load.
  5. Keep bystanders out of the rear path; use a spotter.
  6. Clear ramps and stow gear; remove chocks last.

Trailer & Cargo-Specific Tips

Vehicles on Car Trailers
  • Use wheel chocks and tie-downs at all four wheels.
  • Winch for control; the winch is not a load restraint — still strap it independently.
  • Check tilt/ramps are fully pinned before moving.
Heavy Equipment
  • Secure at low points on the equipment; avoid over-tightening on delicate components.
  • Keep the pull straight onto the deck; avoid side-loading ramps.
Boxes, Crates & Fragile Items
  • Stack evenly; don’t go too high; place heavier boxes at the bottom.
  • Use padding; prevent vibration and rubbing; strap to fixed points.
Cage & Enclosed Trailers
  • Keep doors/gates latched during loading; open slowly in case items shifted.
  • For animals or loose material, keep the area calm and controlled.
  • Use lighting inside enclosed trailers for visibility.
